Fiend-Ohs

Hand drawn, original creeps, fiends and friends by the creator of Cousins, Mildewds and Krypto Kids.

The making of March

Hand-Made, Only 1/1s

Fiend-Ohs started out as a design sketchbook for a future procedural collection. As I created more and more concepts, I realized that my imagination is still way ahead of my generative methods.

I created this collection to attract funds to help keep procedural projects rolling into the future and aimed at new heights of expression. Each Fiend is offered as an ultra-high resolution 1/1 image suitable for printing.

Meet the Artist

Nearly every week I livestream the creation of generative, procedural and hand-drawn art on YouTube and Twitch as well as appearing here and there on other art related shows.

I talk openly and answer questions about generative methods, code, platforms I’m familiar with, artistic approaches and strategies and more.

Come to the show and bring a link to your portfolio. Let’s talk about your work, the future of art and how to coax pixels to dance.

On hiatus for retooling and to accommodate professional obligations. Catch the VODs on YouTube or hit me up on Twitter.

How It’s Made

  • Mining

I like to think of making cool characters as a mining process. Many tons of raw, ore-bearing rubble must be extracted and refined.

Experiments in generating mixes and matches of shapes sometimes get the ball rolling but the vast majority come from ordinary sketching and doodling.

I also keep a list of prompts handy and add to it often.

  • Refining

Dozens upon dozens of sketches are evaluated and from them a handful are escalated for further design. Sometimes they get a few more iterations but often just minor tweaks made while inking.

The inking stage is the most satisfying for me. Once the lines can stand on their own (without the blue sketch layer) I get to see if I pulled it off. Is it ready to consider for color?

  • Polish

With inking complete and wayward designs cast back into the pit, I turn to color. This is the most difficult part for me and maybe the stage at which I lose the most subjects.

Nevertheless, a worthy few find themselves colored, posed, minted and listed.
